Reverse ETL & Data Activation (Census by Fivetran)

Close the loop: get modeled data back into the tools your teams use

Reverse ETL & Data Activation (Census by Fivetran)

Fivetran acquired Census in May 2025, and data activation (reverse ETL) is now part of the same platform that loads your data. That closes a loop that used to require a third vendor: Fivetran syncs sources into the warehouse, dbt models them, and Census pushes the results back out to Salesforce, HubSpot, Marketo, Braze, Intercom, Zendesk, Google Ads, Meta Ads, and hundreds of other destinations.

The value is obvious once you have one clean customer model in the warehouse: every downstream tool gets the same definition of an account, a lead score, or a product-usage signal, instead of each team rebuilding it badly in their own system.

What we do

Activation use cases, scoped. We start with the business question, not the tool. Typical first syncs: product-qualified lead flags into the CRM, usage metrics on account records for customer success, churn-risk audiences into marketing automation, and offline conversions back into ad platforms.

Models built for activation. Reverse ETL is only as good as the model behind it. We build or adapt dbt models that expose stable keys, explicit timestamps, and the exact fields each destination needs, so that syncs are predictable and diff-friendly.

Identity resolution basics. Matching warehouse records to CRM and marketing-tool records by email, domain, or external ID, handling the inevitable duplicates, and deciding which system wins when they disagree. We keep this pragmatic; most teams do not need a full customer data platform to get value.

Audience syncs. Segments defined once in the warehouse and pushed to ad and messaging platforms, with membership changes synced incrementally rather than as full reloads.

Governance for outbound data. Outbound syncs can write to production systems your sales and marketing teams depend on. We set up field-level mappings, dry runs, sync approvals, and alerting so that a bad model change does not overwrite ten thousand CRM records before anyone notices.

Monitoring. Sync health, rejected-record handling, and rate-limit management for destinations with strict APIs.

The two-week activation engagement

  1. Days 1 to 3: pick one or two use cases, confirm the source model and destination fields, agree on the matching keys.
  2. Days 4 to 8: build or harden the dbt model, configure the Census sync, run it against a sandbox or a small segment.
  3. Days 9 to 10: production cutover, alerting, documentation, and a handover session with the teams who own the destination systems.

Later phases add destinations and audiences on the same foundation.

Who this is for

Teams with a warehouse and at least a basic modeled layer who want the data to change what sales, marketing, and support actually do. If the modeled layer is not there yet, we start with Fivetran + dbt transformations and activation follows.
